Seeking a design partner for a new luxury residential development in Bozeman, Montana, Gallatin Valley Design Group knew that Studio Como was the ideal collaborator to deliver on both cabinetry systems and interior staging for the twelve-unit property. The Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic detailed in the design brief spoke to Studio Como’s central strengths: the ability to find and implement the just-right solution within a broad swath of exceptional options, and the know-how for bringing beauty and functionality into balance.
The Wildlands project entailed custom kitchen and wet bar layouts for all units, and staging furnishings for a unit overlooking the Bridger Mountains. Studio Como kitchen designer Matt Smith and design director Laura Folgoni worked together to seamlessly implement both aspects of the job.
“Poliform is the kitchen system Studio Como provides, and it aligned with what the development was trying to achieve in their units,” Matt says about the European cabinetry company Studio Como has worked with for 15 years. “At Wildlands they were wanting a clean and modern look, high-quality materials, and our favorite part, functionality. We all want things to work well, to be easy to use, easy to interact with. And that’s one of the things that Poliform really excels at. It was a natural fit.”
The project was one of Studio Como’s first multi-unit jobs, though Matt shares that across the twelve units there are seven different kitchen layouts—making the project more customized than one might expect. “There’s variation in each of the spaces,” he explains. “Luckily, Poliform is a modular system with the flexibility to accommodate multiple appliance packages. This allowed us to tailor each unit easily, and from an exterior vantage point, Poliform’s quality and fit-and-finish are second to none, which complemented the elevated design details that are in all of the units.” Cohering the differently configured kitchens is a material palette of oak veneer with black lacquer hardware and island paneling selected for visual interest.
In unit #203, Laura selected furnishings by Flexform, Minotti, De La Espada, and Riva 1920. In the living space are the Romeo sectional sofa, Clyfford and Twenty-Five coffee tables, and Aston armchairs, which together make a modern vignette. In the primary bedroom, Minotti’s Yang bed—known for its generous fabric headboard with leather headrest—is flanked with Revo nightstands by Riva 1920. Several side tables by Flexform are placed throughout the unit.
Adding yet another layer of specialization and detail are sculptural pieces by artist Jennifer Alden. Shaped like ancient vessels and made from simple, natural materials, like plaster, jute, wire, and beeswax, Jennifer’s pieces resonate with an elemental quality. They act as small evocations that draw the eye into the sleek, minimalist space, and are perfectly at home.
“Each of our lines offers hundreds of pieces with thousands of configurations,” says Matt of the design process he and Laura undertook. “It’s our job as designers and design consultants to distill those down into a digestible and cohesive collection of parts and pieces that will all work well together, while satisfying a wide range of client tastes.”
