Parentesi Floor Lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù for Flos stands as one of Italian design’s most ingenious solutions to the age-old question of how to position light exactly where you need it. First introduced in 1971, this icon earned its name from the parenthesis symbol—a reference to the nickel-plated tube that slides freely along a floor-to-ceiling steel cable.

The brilliance lies in its deceptive simplicity. A tensioned steel cable stretches from ceiling to floor, reaching up to 13 feet. The cylindrical tube with integrated light head slides up and down this cable with fluid ease, stopping wherever you position it through elegant friction rather than mechanical clamps or screws. Adjust the height with a gentle push, and it holds firm until you move it again. The result is infinitely customizable task or ambient lighting that adapts to your activities throughout the day.

Born from Pio Manzù’s original concept and refined by Achille Castiglioni’s logical yet playful approach to problem-solving, Parentesi represents Italian design at its most functional and enduring. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Flos released two vibrant new editions in Turquoise and Orange Signal alongside the classic finishes. The injection-molded elastomer head directs focused downlight, while an integrated dimmer provides precise brightness control. Installation requires only two mounting points—ceiling and floor—making it remarkably adaptable to spaces with challenging layouts or cathedral ceilings common in mountain architecture.
