Maija Table Lamp

Maija Table Lamp by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Santa & Cole captures a distinctly Nordic experience of light—the way domestic warmth radiates outward through windows onto winter streets in Baltic cities where public lighting is scarce. First designed in 1955, this Finnish classic takes its name from Maija Mehiläinen (Maya the Bee), a beloved animated character of the era, whose honeycomb became the inspiration for the lamp’s signature layered structure.

The lamp’s construction is deceptively simple: a tower of stacked metal discs that allow light to escape through the gaps between each layer, creating a honeycomb-like glow full of visual rhythm. The tabletop version condenses this idea into an intimate scale, rising on three graceful satin brass feet that elevate the matte white body slightly above the surface. Light disperses softly through the horizontal openings without any glare, producing ambient illumination that feels both modern and timelessly Nordic.

What makes Maija particularly suited to contemporary mountain living is its sculptural presence. When off, it reads as a pure geometric form—a meditation on repetition and negative space. When illuminated, it transforms into something alive, each disc revealing itself as part of a carefully orchestrated whole.
